When I think about students who embody the heart of Kaleidoscope, Will Ahn leaps quickly to mind. He is tenacious, curious, and cares about the world. His work as an intern helped us operate smoothly and his insights on our classes helped us lean toward student interests.
I hope you enjoy reading this profile of Will as much as I enjoyed catching up with him over coffee recently.
Where Will is now: Majoring in Business Analytics & Information Systems at the University of Maryland where he is in the QUEST Honors and Public Leadership Scholars programs.
Kaleidoscope affiliations: Alum of Social Sciences for Social Problems (‘18), Student Advisory Board (‘18-20), Business Development intern (‘19-’20)
A risk he’s currently taking: “By being more vulnerable, honest, and open with myself, I’ve been able to communicate how I truly feel with other people. I’m ultimately living a healthier and happier life from it.”
His reading recommendation: Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. “Americanah was the beginning of the exploration of my different identities, and it created the space for me to grow and explore outside of my comfort zone. Great summer read for anyone entering their freshman year of college.”
What he’s doing this summer: “I’m interning at the Department of Justice during Summer 2022 and through the school year!”
A Kaleidoscope skill he still uses: “Kaleidoscope taught me how to tell stories. Everyone wants to create change, but you can’t go anywhere without other people’s help. How do you get other people involved? You inspire them through a great story.”
Why Will thinks high school students should get involved with Kaleidoscope: “If you want to think critically, learn to write well, and pursue your passion for societal change, Kaleidoscope will give you the skills + connections + knowledge to embrace that part of yourself to create a real impact in the world.”
Will’s advice to high school students: “Find comfort in ambiguity. Life is ambiguous, and you will never find or get the right answer. You just have to open yourself to the possibility of change and ultimately, be fearless in the end.”
