Alumni Profile - Lyla Bhalla-Ladd

Where Lyla is now: Majoring in Journalism at the University of Southern California.

Kaleidoscope affiliations: Alum of Social Sciences for Social Problems (‘18), Student Advisory Board (‘18-present), Business Development Intern (‘19), SEO/ Editorial Intern (‘22)

How Kaleidoscope influenced her path: “Kaleidoscope taught me what you’re expected to know before college but no one specifically teaches in high school. Skills like Excel proficiency, how to do an elevator pitch, how to analyze data beyond the science classroom, and even how to tell my own story. I still refer back to my old notes from 2018 on how to storyline. The Social Studies for Social Problems class helped me write my college applications and the CVs I use today.”

What she’s doing this summer: “I’m interning with HiP Paris, a digital blog, helping to write and manage the blog as well as social media marketing. After living abroad in Paris for a year, I am so excited to write about my favorite recommendations and local tips for a larger audience than my own blog. I’m also working with Kaleidoscope again, helping to optimize our website and make sure Kaleidoscope reaches the students that are trying to find their courses. Lastly, I’m waitressing at a restaurant in Georgetown!”

A risk she’s currently taking: “I moved to France for my freshman year of college last year. I had never been, didn’t speak the language, and did not know anyone there. It was a huge adjustment, but an adventure that I am so glad I embarked on, and one that taught me so much. Then I took the risk of transferring schools to USC! I cannot wait to get started in Los Angeles at the Journalism school.”

Her reading recommendation:The Battle of Versailles by Robin Givhan. I love reading fashion history, and Givhan is my favorite voice on the matter. Even if you don’t care for fashion itself, The Battle of Versailles places fashion in its historical context, and really explains why we should pay attention to fashion as an art.”

Her advice to high school seniors & college freshmen: “Try to keep the mindset that no matter which path you take, out of the many in front of you during the college process, every one of them is a good choice and a huge opportunity. College is what you make of it! You’re at a really special time in your life to take risks and make mistakes! Don’t be afraid of a “wrong choice” or a “bad school”- no such thing!”
